Like HD-DVD the High Definition Blu Ray players can deliver stunning images to your screen and can handle Full HD (1920x1080) material. Blu- Ray and HD-DVD players can also play your normal DVD discs and with built in scalers can deliver images up to 1080p through their HDMI output.

The increased storage capacity of Blu-ray discs offers 25 GB of content on a single-sided disc - over five times the capacity of traditional DVDs and enough space for two hours of high-definition movies or recorded material. Likewise HD-DVD can store over three times more information than a standard DVD on a single sided disc.

Our Comments: The Panasonic BD10 is our current Blu-ray player of choice. The images it produces with the Blu-Ray discs are without a doubt fantastic; layers and layers of detail are clearly visible on every type of flat panel. Connect the Panasonic to a Full HD TV like the KDL40w2000 from Sony or the PDP5000ex from Pioneer and the benefits of the new format are jaw dropping. It is not just about the Blu Ray disc with this machine though, playback of standard DVD's is more than admirable and compares favourably with machines like the DV989 from Pioneer. This is a real area of strength for the Panasonic as it can upscale DVD pictures to 1080p to make the most of your existing movie collection. On DVD performance alone the Panasonic outclasses the other Blu-Ray contenders we have viewed - the Samsung BD1000 and the Sony Playstaion 3 - and if you are looking for a premium DVD player you should consider this model, with the added advantage of superb Blu-Ray playback the BD10 is an excellent package.
